For those of you who know me well, know how much I love the desert. The colours, the vegetation, the heat, it all inspires me. British Columbia has very little desert landscape, mostly in the southern interior only; however, Kamloops is considered to be part of a semi-desert landscape which I believe comes with the best of both worlds: wild sage and stunning mountains.
When Hillary and Jordon connected with me about their intimate wedding in Kamloops, BC I may have gotten a bit giddy. Hillary grew up on the Tk’emlups Territory and wanted to invite their closest family and friends to celebrate there. What better way then to host your wedding in the backyard you grew up playing in? I couldn’t have been more excited to document their intimate wedding.
As I was driving along the Duffey highway on a gorgeous October day I knew the inspiration had just begun. I love when the landscape shifts from coastal to interior mountains. All the trees begin to get smaller and the dry red sand peels down the mountain faces. It truly is breathtaking. After passing through Lillooet and Cache Creek, the mountains began to open up and there were more lakes and country side lined with herds of cows. The fall colours were in full bloom and the muted grass complimented it. I love a good scenic road trip accompanied by music!
They held their ceremony at the Secwépemc Heritage Park which held great significance in Hillary’s family as it was previously the residential school where her grandmother and siblings attended. She also wore her grandmothers moccasins as her something old and something borrowed. All of these sentimental pieces added to the spirit of their celebration. Whether it be a physical heirloom or an emotional meaning, these are all elements that can help make your wedding day unique to you.
From the warm crisp fall breeze to the warmth of the late night bonfire, Hillary and Jordon’s intimate wedding in Kamloops represented them to a tee. So grateful to have been a part of their special day and also be completely inspired by my love for desert landscape and beautiful traditions.
