This Whistler engagement photography session on Alta Lake was filled with sentiment and nostalgia. When Madeline and Tynan first connected about their wedding we chatted about all the logistics surrounding their day. She really wanted to get ready at her family cabin here in Whistler which to me sounded incredible! As the wedding timeline progressed, they realized that logistically it wasn’t going to work out. I could tell she was a little crushed. This cabin held deep meaning, so when it came time to organize their engagement session it was clear that we had to explore the cabin!
This cabin has been in the family for over 80 years and is tucked away in the Whistler forest. As we meandered through the trees, we captured them along some of the same paths she had explored as a child. The second we arrived I had goosebumps. The history, family traditions and heirlooms were the first thing that caught my eye. Then the reminiscent furniture that had not moved in decades. It was as though I had taken a step back in time and could feel the summer breeze of Whistler back in the 1950’s. Pure magic.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a family cabin growing up. Many of my childhood friends had cabins so naturally I got to experience cabin life. I remember always feeling a sense of comfort at the family cabin. It was okay that there was sand in the house and sometimes ants in the cereal box. Most importantly it was the photographs that hung on the walls. Memories of generations enjoying the cabin and lakeside life always peaked my interest.
M & T’s Whistler engagement photography session allowed us to get acquainted before their wedding celebration. I can begin to see how they interact with one another in front of the lens. It also begin to learn more about their relationship. For instance, I discovered that they met at a Halloween party a few years prior which played a role in making their session unique to them. He was dressed as a Viking and she was a panda bear. Naturally they brought parts of their costumes to the session, I couldn’t believe they still had them! These sentimental bits gave the images more personality which I have no doubt they will cherish for a lifetime.
