This isn’t a post just about Whistler portrait photography, but it extends into an entire reflection in images of 2019. Sadly, 2018 didn’t get reviewed because going through this process of curating my year of images within a single post is a personal feat. Why do you ask? Because last year I probably shot over 70,000 raw images. I know what you are thinking… does all of that sit on hard drives and cloud storage? The answer is HECK YA it does!
One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned in photography school was to take a step back from the work, set it aside and wait. When you revisit and look at images you took 6 months ago, 2 weeks ago, yesterday, they can begin to reveal more. Going through the sessions and events I photographed in 2019 allowed me to observe and reflect on the challenges I faced.
I’ve been fortunate to have incredible clients who trust my creative vision which is very hard to describe at times. Being a Whistler portrait based photographer I’ve become drawn to the connection between people and the emotion within it. Stepping into these intimate moments I’ve felt more empathy, more understanding and more reflection year after year. Photographing families, engagements, weddings, elopements, etc., have all played a huge role in seeing the diversity between peoples love.
Life is an interesting journey and within this small window of time we try our best to surround ourselves with good people. People we trust, people we cry to, laugh with, explore with, make hard decisions with, toast to, look out for and to simply be with.
I am beyond grateful that my camera allows me to capture these moments. Whether it be a great grandfather holding his great grandson, or a mother helping her daughter get dressed on her wedding day. Give me all the real happy tears and hilarious speeches. I’m always searching for the genuine.
Thanks to everyone who shared a part of themselves with me in 2019. It means the world.
